The History & Legacy of Hell’s Revenge Trail in Moab, Utah
Hell’s Revenge Trail near Moab, Utah has been a legendary destination for 4×4 off-road, Jeep, UTV, ATV, and side-by-side enthusiasts since at least the 1970s. Its origins are tied to the early days of slickrock exploration, following in the footsteps of the 1969-mapped Slickrock Bike Trail. What began as rugged desert terrain for motorcycles soon evolved into one of the most iconic off-road trails in the world.
The unique sandstone landscape of Moab’s slickrock provided the perfect setting for technical climbs, sharp descents, and natural obstacles. Over time, off-road pioneers carved a route across these sandstone fins, giving birth to Hell’s Revenge. Its famous challenges including Hell’s Gate, the Tip-Over Challenge, the Escalator, and the Hot Tubs-quickly gained notoriety. Each obstacle pushed Jeeps, UTVs, ATVs, and side-by-sides to their limits, turning the trail into a proving ground for drivers and machines alike.
Growth Through the Jeep Safari
The trail’s reputation grew alongside the Easter Jeep Safari, an annual gathering that has drawn thousands of Jeep and 4×4 enthusiasts to Moab for over five decades. During this event, Hell’s Revenge became a centerpiece trail, celebrated for its thrilling terrain and breathtaking views of the Colorado River, Arches National Park, and the La Sal Mountains.
Local organizations like the Red Rock 4-Wheelers ensured the trail was properly maintained and safely marked, while sponsors like BFGoodrich Tires contributed funding for conservation, trail upkeep, and responsible off-road recreation. This collaboration helped transform Hell’s Revenge into a safe but challenging adventure for visitors from around the world.
Recognition as a National Recreation Trail
In 2024, Hell’s Revenge was officially designated a National Recreation Trail, recognizing both its outdoor recreation value and its role in the history of off-road culture. This designation ensures that the trail will be preserved for future generations of Jeep, UTV, ATV, side-by-side, and 4×4 adventurers, protecting the delicate slickrock ecosystem while allowing drivers to experience the thrill of one of Moab’s most famous routes.
Why Hell’s Revenge Stands Out
Technical challenge: The steep slickrock climbs, ledges, and narrow passes demand skill from even experienced off-road drivers.
Variety of vehicles: From classic Jeeps to modern UTVs, ATVs, and side-by-sides, the trail offers a test for nearly every type of 4×4 vehicle.
Unmatched scenery: Off-roaders are rewarded with panoramic views of red rock canyons, snow-capped peaks, and dramatic desert sunsets.
Cultural impact: Hell’s Revenge is more than a trail—it’s a tradition, representing decades of Moab off-road history and community pride.
Hell’s Revenge Trail in Moab, Utah is a world-famous off-road destination with a history stretching back to the slickrock exploration days of the 1960s and 1970s.
